Information

Description:
The surface and interface research laboratory of the department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of the faculty 3mE of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) hosts a wide range of analytical facilities for microstructure and chemical composition analysis of a broad range of materials. Some of these facilities include or are coupled to facilities for in-situ materials surface processing and (micro) mechanical testing. These techniques are available for users mainly from within TU Delft and are operated by various users from various application areas. Hence, the tools need to be user-friendly, reliable and flexible.

The faculty 3mE wants to purchase a new VT-STM system to extend her current capabilities. There are four important application areas for which the instrument will be used:
(1) atomic structure of metal surfaces to observe defects and surface reconstruction;
(2) segregation of alloying elements;
(3) interaction between gasses with metal surfaces;
(4) oxidation and reduction at metal surfaces.

The VT-STM system needs to be state-of-the art in terms imaging performance in both scanning tunnelling and atomic force mode. The system allows studying the sample surface in ultra high vacuum at temperatures in the range of 300 to 1200 K. To this end, the stability and resolution of the instrument should be excellent over the whole temperature range. The system is equipped with an optical microscope to observe the sample position and with an ion and atomic hydrogen gun for surface cleaning. Further, the system is provided with a gas dosing system to admit gasses, such as: H2, N2, O2, Cl2 but also H2, H2S, CH4, NH3, CO, CO2 etc. The vacuum chamber should be configured such that the system can be extended with a mass spectrometer, electron spectrometer, X-ray source, etc. Also, a high flexibility is required when operating VT-STM system. The system is fully computer controlled.
