TenneT has awarded HVDC converter platform and HVDC land station to the BorWin5 Offshore Consortium, a consortium consisting of Siemens AG and Dragados Offshore S.A.
The HVDC converter platform, called BorWin epsilon, includes a jacket of approx. 7.200 t gross weight and a topside of approx. 13.200 t gross weight. The platform is designed to transmit 900 MW of export capacity to onshore. It will be situated in the North Sea in a water depth of up to approximately 40 m and located around 110 km from landfall in Germany. The BorWin epsilon execution of a main ground investigation for the specific type of foundation is to be done in accordance with the BSH standard for subsoil investigation and the EC-7 (DIN EN 1997-2, DIN 4020 and DIN 18088) by means of direct surveys (drillings) and indirect surveys (soundings). In addition to the general ground investigation for BorWin epsilon, a preliminary ground investigation for Borwin kappa could be optionally done. With the BorWin6 project TenneT is planning a direct current connection in North Sea Cluster 7, Zone 2. The three-phase current generated in the wind farm is to be converted into direct current on the "BorWin kappa" offshore converter platform and via a submarine cable transported above Helgoland to onshore in Büttel, Schleswig-Holstein.
Execution of both surveys shall be planned End of March/Beginning of April 2021.
