UNLOCK is a collaboration between the WUR chair groups of Laboratory of Microbiology, Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology, Department of Environmental Technology and the Department of Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology. Together they received funding for the development and operation of the UNLOCK infrastructure for microbiome research, as part of the NWO Roadmap for large scale infrastructure for scientific research.
There are 3 challenges in microbiome research that UNLOCK aims to address. - Large scale, highly paralleled, flexible fermentation / to study microbes and microbiomes under various controlled conditions.
- Characterize microbial communities, including the microbes, their activity and interactions: Which microbes are there, what do they consume and produce under which conditions.
- Store and analyse the data from the previously mentioned challenges in a transparent and uniform way, meeting the FAIR principles with respect to findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability.
The automated workstation described in this tender is required for tackling the second challenge. With an automated workstation it will become possible to process many samples in a short period of time. The various conditions studied in the first challenge, will most likely result in a large number of samples on a daily basis. In order to provide complete and unbiased information, the envisaged system should provide the necessary technology to extract nucleic acids, proteins and metabolites from a single sample. The extracts can be analysed for their microbial composition, activity, consumption and production. These processed samples will generate a large amount of data that will become part of the third challenge, to store and analyse data in a transparent and uniform way (FAIR Data Platform).
