Announcement of the Tendering Phase for the innovation partnership on "Offshore Subsea Transformers".
General information on the project Offshore wind energy makes a significant contribution to achieving the goal of greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045 in Germany. According to the amendment to the Wind Energy at Sea Act, which came into force on January 1, 2023, the construction of offshore grid connection systems is in the overriding public interest and serves public safety (Section 1 (3) WindSeeG). The expansion targets of 30 GW by 2030, 40 GW by 2035 and 70 GW by 2045, which have been raised again as part of the amendment to the Act, call for a strong acceleration of offshore expansion.
To meet the targeted offshore wind expansions of more than 70 GW by 2045 in Germany and 300 GW in Europe, TOG identified the need to drive the development of innovative solutions for cost-effective, low maintenance offshore grid connections, with limited dependency on global supply chains and limited environmental impact.
TenneT is currently exploring modular and scalable offshore subsea technologies as potential next innovative step to simplify large scale offshore wind grid connection systems and enabling further technical options for the offshore grid topology. As a first of a series of relevant innovation steps, a subsea power transformer shall be developed with the goal to have a full-scale prototype ready until 2028.
