General information Maastricht University
Maastricht University (UM) is known in the Netherlands and abroad for its unique education system: problem-based learning (PGO). UM also distinguishes itself by its strong international orientation. An increasing number of students from all over the Netherlands as well as from abroad opts for the Maastricht system. UM is the youngest university of the Netherlands and growing fast. It currently has approximately 18,000 students and 4,400 employees. Education and research at UM are mainly organised on the basis of faculties and schools. More information on UM can be found on the internetsitewww.maastrichtuniversity.nl.
Description of the Contract Maastricht University as the lead-partner in the ETpathfinder project will host a facility aimed at the development and tests of extremely sensitive optical interferometers like those used in gravitational wave detectors. The primary goal is to improve the sensitivity to the level required by future generations of gravitational wave detectors. ETpathfinder will be an international center for research into high-precision measurement techniques, vibration isolation, measurement and control software, cryogenics and (quantum) optics in the context of next-generation gravitational-wave infrastructures. Within the facility (see an overview in Figure 2.1), high precision optical systems will be installed, together with their vibration isolation units, inside an ultra-high vacuum vessel (UHV) which provides the environment for the R&D activities. A more detailed description of the ETpathfinder project can be found in: https://www.etpathfinder.eu/.
The optics in ETpathfinder will be cooled to cryogenic temperatures. To shield from thermal radiation, sets of thermal shields will surround the mirror. The middle set of shields, the topic of this tender, will be connected to a liquid-nitrogen thermal bath. The heat from thermal radiation from the room-temperature environment is conductively transported by these shields towards the liquid nitrogen. Therefore, these shields need to have high thermal conductivity and need to be created from a special type of Aluminum. A CAD view of the cryogenic shields, consisting of primarily Aluminum (left: full model, right: cross-section), can be found in Figure 1. For reference, the outer dimensions of the "box" are: (HJB: estimated. Mathijs should give correct dimensions) 1290x610x1180mm. In total 5 of such assemblies are to be manufactured. Further details are given in the bill of materials (BOM) and the CAD drawings, see the program of requirements section.
Purpose and intended result of the Tender Procedure The purpose of this Tender Procedure is to enter into an Agreement with 1 (one) party.
